The conversation you keep rehearsing

You've had the conversation forty times. In the shower, on the drive, in the gap between meetings. You've played their lines and yours, tried the gentle opening and the direct one, and every rehearsal ends the same place: you'll say it this week. Then standup happens, and they're good in it, and you think maybe it's fine, and the week absorbs the whole thing until Thursday night hands it back.

Co-founder tension is uniquely unsayable because of a cruel loop: the one person who understands the company well enough to think it through with you is the person the thinking is about. Your team can't hear it — it would leak, or land as instability. Investors definitely can't. The person at home has heard enough versions to have picked a side, which doesn't help either.

So it stays in rehearsal. And rehearsed grievances have a chemistry problem: they concentrate. Each run-through distills the story a little further toward your version, until the actual human you started a company with has been replaced in your head by a character who only does the annoying things.

What actually helps — before the big conversation, not instead of it — is saying the messy, unfair, first-draft version out loud somewhere consequence-free. Not the diplomatic script. The real one: I feel like I'm carrying this alone, I resent the trips, I don't know if we want the same company anymore. Said aloud, first drafts do something they never do in your head: they sort themselves. Half of it turns out to be tiredness. A quarter is a real, nameable, negotiable thing. And the remainder is usually one sentence you've been avoiding, which is the one the eventual conversation is actually about.

Northwind is a decent room for that draft. It remembers the last four times you circled this, which means it can say the thing rehearsal can't: you've been here before, and it's getting more specific. What you do with the real conversation stays entirely yours. But walk in having said it once already, out loud, and you'll notice you rehearse differently — less like a prosecutor, more like a partner.
