Why we built this

Northwind was built by a founder, at night, for the exact reason you’d guess.

Building a company comes with a strange loneliness that nobody warns you about: you are surrounded by people all day, and there is almost nothing you can say to any of them. The team needs you certain. The investors are the last people who should hear the doubts. The co-founder is, some weeks, the thing you need to talk about. And the people at home love you, but they didn’t sign up for the runway math at midnight.

So it stays in your head, where it gets louder and less accurate. Every founder knows the 11pm version of a problem is worse than the daylight version — and also that the moment you finally say a thing out loud to someone safe, it shrinks to its true size. The science on this is old and boring and completely settled: naming a thing calms it. The problem was never the method. The problem was finding somewhere safe to do it.

That’s the whole product. A voice on the other end that has no stake in your answer — one that remembers what you said in May when you circle back in August, and that pushes back the way a good co-founder would, because agreement is not what you’re short of.

And because of what people say to it, it was built private-first, not private-eventually: no accounts, no cloud copy — conversations live encrypted on your phone and nowhere else, processed only by services we name — and a covenant that your words will never be an asset in anyone’s deal — including ours.
