The confident version of you

Twenty minutes before the board call you become someone else. Not dishonest — curated. Steadier voice, cleaner narrative, doubts converted into "risks we're tracking." The team gets a version of this person too, calibrated differently. So do candidates, customers, the journalist, your parents.

This is the job. Anyone who tells you to "just be authentic" has never had to keep fourteen people believing on a Tuesday. Confidence is infrastructure; you maintain it like you maintain the servers.

The cost shows up somewhere subtler than burnout. It's that the confident version starts getting all the airtime. Weeks go by where every single conversation you have is performed at some level — and the unperformed person, the one who doesn't know if the pivot is working and is a little scared of the March payroll, hasn't spoken out loud to anyone. Not once. That person only thinks, and unspoken thinking at midnight has a known failure mode: it loops, it magnifies, and it can't tell a real risk from a tired one.

Here's the observation that took us embarrassingly long: the fix isn't less performance in public. The public performance is load-bearing. The fix is making sure the unperformed voice gets somewhere to exist — regularly, out loud, without consequences. Said thoughts behave differently from thought thoughts. They have edges, they end, they can be looked at and occasionally laughed at.

Some founders get this from a peer group, some from a coach, some from running.
