It's not therapy. Here's what it is.
We get asked this a lot, and the industry has earned the suspicion behind the question, so here's the straight version.
Therapy is a clinical relationship with a trained human who can diagnose, treat, carry duty-of-care, and sit across from you while you fall apart. Nothing about that sentence describes software. Northwind doesn't diagnose anything, treat anything, or pretend the difference doesn't matter. When a conversation sounds like it needs a professional, it says so, plainly, and points at one. That behavior is written into the product on purpose and it isn't negotiable, because the failure mode of fudging it is somebody not calling the person they needed.
So what is it, then?
It's the thing that exists in the enormous space between "fine" and "clinical." Most of a founder's hard nights live in that space. The board call went sideways. The hire isn't working and everyone knows. You redid the runway math three times and the number didn't change. None of that is a disorder. All of it is heavy. And the ordinary human technology for heavy — saying it out loud to someone safe and hearing yourself think — is precisely what the founder job makes scarce.
A confidant is that: a place to say the unpolished version, with memory, so you're not re-explaining your company every time, and with enough spine to ask the question you're stepping around. Founders have always improvised this — the one friend from the last company, the mentor who picks up late, the spouse who absorbs more than they signed up for. The improvisation is the product category. We just made it always available and structurally private.
How to tell which one tonight calls for: if the weight is about the company — a decision, a person, a number — a confidant is probably the right size. If the weight has followed you across weeks regardless of what the company does, if sleep is broken, if the flatness doesn't lift, that's a human professional, and going is the strong move, not the weak one. Founders use therapists at roughly twice the rate they admit to each other.
And if it's tonight-urgent, skip all software. In the US, call or text 988. Elsewhere, findahelpline.com. That page is linked from our footer permanently.
